		Having accomplished a significant number of projects in this area, the Research Institute has acquired significant expertise in the design and implementation of complex O-O architectures providing Internet solutions for digital publishing. Our work has  focused on: Java servers, portals and their associated technologies: Security, e.g., basic/digest authentication schemes, SSL. Applets, Java servlets and Java Server Pages (JSP). Document formats, e.g., HTML, XML, DocBook, PostScript, PDF. Job Processing Specifications, e.g., JDF JobTickets, XML JobTickets, StyleSheets. Support for publishing devices, such as, printers, scanners, OCRs, cameras, and tablets. Interoperability with legacy systems (database connectivity, network management) and other distributed architectures (CORBA, eSpeak). Dynamic document processing (PDF workflows, content management). An Innovative Component Framework

We have designed a general-purpose software architecture to build e-business solutions and applications for e-Publishing. We were motivated by the importance of producing real market products in a time comparable to that required to develop a prototype. The capability of reusing software components is not only a critical factor for this purpose, but it also helps to reduce development costs for future projects and products.

Some of the characteristics of our Java Framework for Digital Publishing are the following:

• Scalability.
• Easy to develop applications built on the framework.
• Component based, developers can add, reuse and update components.
• Leveraged development of e-publishing applications.
• Open for using and interacting with third party components.
• Customizable. User interfaces are also components, we can plug-and-play different look-and-feels.
• Configurable user interfaces, workflows and processing policies.
• Benefits from the use of open software.
• Portability, all our applications are tested to work in Linux and MS Windows environments. Other platforms would also be acceptable since the framework is constructed in Java.
• Excellent performance by tuning the Java bytecode compiler to generate optimised native code.

Multiple prototype applications and products have been built around our framework. Most of the time these applications are targeted at a specific segment of the publishing, printing and pre-press industries.

• Producing real books from digital e-Books.
• Linking printed e-Books to multimedia content.
• Reproduction of ancient books from digitalized content.
• Creating virtual printer drivers.

• Finishing and impositioning in PDF and PostScript.
• Produce pre-press preflights.
• Customization and personalization of content.
• Clustering and Spooling.
• Produce PDF Workflows.
• Secure printing.

Based on our framework for Digital publishing our expert team of developers is able to develop a full prototype solution in a minimum amount of time.

We are able to enhance our prototypes to meet product level quality requirements by adding extra phases of Quality Assessment in the development cycle.

We assist our customers by tuning the prototypes so that the final product has the right look and feel. We also assist in the definition of requirements, mostly from the technical and architectural points of view.
