Introducing "ATM for the rest
of us!"(tm)
ATM provides the standards-based high-speed switching
technology that today's networks demand. However,
only Universities, Governments, Utilities, and the
Fortune 100 companies could afford ATM switches . . .
until now.
For the first time, affordable high performance ATM
is available to everyone as the ACX Series from
AVIDIA Systems(tm) ushers in a new era of desktop
productivity.
The ACX Series brings high performance ATM switching
to LAN workgroups, the corporate Internet/Intranet,
and networked PC applications, and provides at least
a 65% improvement in data throughput in client/server
LAN applications, while supporting new desktop
productivity applications like voice and desktop
video conferencing.
Reported by independent testing
firm LANQuest Labs, 1996
The ACX Series is designed to meet the demanding
needs of today's production networks - with hardware
features such as redundancy (even our smallest ATM
switch offers optional dual power supplies),
integrated WAN access and software features such as
ATM Forum UNI 3.0 and 3.1, SNMP and Java(tm)-enabled
network management, Classical IP, and LAN Emulation
(LANE).
SIMPLICITY
Existing router vendors may tell you that ATM is
complicated - while they add ATM interfaces to their
products. In fact, ATM is remarkably easy, and
AVIDIA's ACX Series makes it even easier with
PersistentPath(tm), further reducing the need to even
configure an ACX Switch. With AVIDIA's LANE software,
LAN applications don't even "know" they are
running over ATM . . . they just work better.
SCALEABLE, STACKABLE SWITCHES
Supporting between 12 and 120 ports, all members of
the ACX Series use the same plug-in modules, making
the product line highly scaleable and greatly
reducing maintenance and spare parts complexity. As
requirements change, the ACX Series provides
investment protection by not only offering simple and
powerful stacking arrangements, but also allowing
modules to be redeployed in larger or smaller
platforms.
FLEXIBILITY
The ACX Series are not only high performance,
affordable ATM switches, they are open switching
platforms. AVIDIA's OpenFlex(tm) architecture enables
the rapid integration of new hardware and software
features, providing a platform for growth. The
feature-rich, highly integrated ACX-1200
ATM Access Switch for example, supports not only
25 and 155 Mbps ATM switching ports, but also offers
robust Wide Area Network interfaces, including T1/E1,
ISDN, Frame Relay, and an integrated WEB server.
COMMITMENT TO STANDARDS
AVIDIA is fully committed to standards compliance.
The ACX Series supports the current ATM Forum
specifications, including UNI 3.0 and 3.1 (for both
SVC and PVC), Classical IP, LANE 1.0, PNNI
specifications, as well as important International
standards. New software releases, including support
for updated and emerging standards such as UNI 4.0,
PNNI 1.0, etc., can be downloaded to AVIDIA switches,
providing full protection against equipment
obsolescence.
A COMPLETE FAMILY
From the 12-port ACX-100, to the 120-port ACX-1200,
AVIDIA's ACX Series is a complete ATM switching
family which enables ATM for the rest of us!(tm)
ACX-100(tm) ATM Workgroup Switch
12 ports plus OC3c uplink - providing immediate ATM
performance at low cost. Ideal for small PC
workgroups.
ACX-300(tm) ATM Departmental
Switch
12, 24, or 36 ports plus up to three OC3c ports for
uplinks and for connection to high performance
workstations and file servers - providing ATM
performance in a small, scaleable package. Ideal for
small to medium workgroups.
ACX-1200(tm) ATM Access Switch
12 to 120 ports plus up to ten OC3c ports for uplinks
and for connection to high performance workstations
and file servers. Supports an integrated WAN
processor, T1/E1, ISDN, and Frame Relay, Ethernet,
Token Ring, and integrated WEB server - providing
total workgroup connectivity. Ideal for medium to
large workgroups.
AIMS(tm) AVIDIA Internet
Management Server
A Java(tm)-enabled management application which
provides configuration, monitoring, and management of
the ACX Series using a standard web browser via the
world-wide internet, via a private router network, or
via the ATM network.
ROUTER BACKBONE
The ACX Series fully supports LANE and Classical IP
encapsulation. By upgrading most popular routers with
at least one ATM port, selected workgroups can take
advantage of ATM without needing to deploy an
enterprise-wide ATM backbone - a significant cost
savings over over current ATM backbone solutions.
Workgroups equipped with AVIDIA Switches benefit from
high-speed ATM performance at the workgroup level,
and fully and seamlessly participate in existing
corporate networks.
ATM BACKBONE NETWORK
The ACX Series is compatible with new or existing ATM
backbone networks, and provides low cost workgroup
switches which bring ATM's Quality of Service (QoS)
to the desktop. Multiple high-speed 155 Mbps ports in
the ACX-300 and ACX-1200 support connections
to workgroup-level high-speed file servers, and also
serve as switching and concentration points for other
workgroups.
