Port of Singapore to Automate Cargo Terminal with Orbix SolutionGroup Silicomp Building System to Automate over 80 Cranes
Cambridge, MA, 20th February 1997: IONA Technologies has announced that the Port of Singapore is currently undertaking the automation of its cargo handling terminal using IONA Technologies' object request broker, Orbix. This major project is being designed and deployed by Groupe Schneider and Groupe Silicomp. Groupe Silicomp, a member of IONA's OrbixWise partners program, is developing the system around their APPLI-BUS MiddleWare, an Orbix-based integration platform for manufacturing applications. APPLI-BUS integrates manufacturing devices, operating systems, networks, databases and applications. Container traffic in the Port of Singapore is growing steadily. There are on average 800 ships on site at any one time using approximately 530 shipping lines to link with nearly 700 ports worldwide. Currently, the cargo is handled by manually controlled cranes, however, the Port of Singapore Authority, aims to streamline the circulation of goods within the port, with the goal of automating over 80 cranes. The automation of the Pasir Panjang terminal in the Port, using Orbix-based APPLI-BUS, is intended to remove the need for direct physical manipulation of machinery in the port, enabling one person to operate three cranes without any physical effort from the remote control operation center. The network is based on ATM technology from FORE systems, with video flows from the cranes to be transmitted using Silicomp's VideoBOX codecs. This system is intended to break new ground coupling ATM and video streams in an real time industrial environment. "One of the principal reasons for Port's choice of APPLI-BUS was the speed with which it allows application development" commented Emmanuel Arnould, Senior Executive Vice President of Silicomp. "By utilizing Orbix we can ensure that our applications are fully interoperable and platform independent, without modifying any code. By taking this approach we are protecting the Port's investment from computing and manufacturing developments. In addition, the solution is portable and can be re-used in other environments." "Orbix was designed to provide a fast, flexible and scaleable solution to varied integration problems being faced by organizations across the globe," commented Colin Newman, VP Marketing at IONA Technologies. "Silicomp's use of Orbix in the Port of Singapore demonstrates the deployment of Orbix as a mission critical systems integrator in a diverse large scale project." Silicomp Ingnierie is a subsidiary of Groupe SILICOMP, a French holding company incorporated in 1983, which provides products, services, consulting and system integration in the manufacturing, scientific, technical computation and communication fields. Within the group, Silicomp Ingnierie is the subsidiary chiefly responsible for engineering and product development. Among Groupe SILICOMP's customers in the manufacturing and research market are Renault, Thomson, Schneider and Dassault. Arospatiale and the Advanced Information Technology Consortium, two more of its customers, are also using APPLI-BUS at present. Groupe Silicomp has offices in Singapore, Boston, Paris, Geneva.
