The V-Switch is the only networking product on the market to deliver ATM to the desktop at switched Ethernet prices. Using a unique modular, stackable architecture that is optimized to handle both bursty LAN traffic and new multimedia classes of services, the V-Switch simultaneously switches digital transmissions such as ISDN, audio/video, and LAN data. Its built-in LAN Emulation (LANE) server provides transparent connectivity to LANs, resulting in significant performance improvements without changes to the existing wiring structure.

ATM Workgroup Switch

The V-Switch is ideal as a workgroup switch, offering 25 Mbps ATM to the desktop, a 155 Mbps ATM uplink, a LANE gateway, and network management. While supporting existing networks, the V-Switch offers a sensible migration path to an ATM cell-based switching architecture, improving the performance of today's network applications while enabling more sophisticated applications that integrate voice, video, and high-speed data traffic.

Modular, Scalable Configuration

The V-Switch is available in modular configurations, offering a scalable solution for growing workgroups.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

  • ATM Standards-Compliant. Complies with ATM Forum UNI 3.0 switched virtual circuit (SVC) signaling, and LAN Emulation (LANE 1.0) standards to assure interoperability with other ATM products. ATM Forum-compliant LANE 1.0 also assures seamless connectivity to existing LAN networks and protocols.
  • Flexible, Software-Based Architecture. Uses a RISC-based software architecture that can easily accommodate future upgrades and enhancements. The software approach is complemented by a central hardware accelerator and port ASICs that boost the switching performance.
  • Scalable Architecture. The V-Switch product line supports a wide array of desktop and backbone interconnect ports including: 25 or 155 Mbps ATM, Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Token Ring.
  • ATM QOS Management. Provides support for ATM Forum-compliant CBR, VBR, UBR, and ABR classes of service. The V-Switch provides a "guaranteed" path for time-sensitive multimedia traffic such as audio and video which require guaranteed bandwidth and minimum delay, and an "available" path for bursty LAN traffic. In cases of extreme congestion, Early Packet Discard algorithms are used to ease congestion and minimize packet loss. ABR with EFCI marking is used for congestion notification.
  • Network Management. Provides support for IETF and ATM Forum-compliant Network Management, including SNMP with ATM MIB support, ILMI, and Connection Management Software. Support is provided for popular management packages such as HP OpenView, SunNet Manager, and NetView 6000.

  • Optional Rate Pacing Module. An add-on module provides rate control for 155 Mbps circuits with special QoS requirements. This allows highly bursty data applications to run smoothly across the V-Switch. A central buffer pool with 32 K cells or more accepts the peak rate of two 155 Mbps ports.
