ATM/ISDN GATEWAY FOR REMOTE H.320
VIDEOCONFERENCING TO THE DESKTOP
The V-Gate is an ATM/ISDN gateway that distributes high-quality, remote H.320 streams to the desktop over ATM.
With First Virtual's unique solution, desktop videoconferencing clients (DVC) communicate with the V-Gate rather
than directly to an ISDN line for local and WAN conferencing. This allows ISDN lines to be shared among DVC
workstations, eliminating the need and cost of pulling a separate ISDN line to each desktop.
Room-System Quality over ATM
Because the V-Gate redirects ISDN calls through ATM, any DVC workstation can operate at up to 384 Kbps for
room-system quality videoconferencing. In addition, each workstation can simultaneously run other data sharing and
LAN applications over the same wire, without degradation of quality.
Supports any H.320 ISDN Client
The V-Gate is compatible with any H.320 ISDN device, communicating with popular desktop and room system
codecs from market leaders such as PictureTel, VTEL, and Zydacron. First Virtual's MOS for H.320 client software
and MVIP videoconferencing module enable these H.320 applications to run over ATM via a 25 Mbps connection to
First Virtual's V-Switch.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS
- Remote, High-Speed H.320 Videoconferencing over Shared ISDN Lines. Enables multiple desktop
videoconferencing (DVC) workstations to share ISDN lines while conducting 2x64 Kbps to 384 Kbps, or 2x56
Kbps to 336 Kbps videoconferences.
- High-Quality H.320 Videoconferencing at a Low Cost. Eliminates the expense of pulling separate ISDN
lines to each desktop while also enabling room-system quality global 384 Kbps videoconferencing at the
lowest price in the marketplace.
- H.320, ISDN, and ATM Standards-Compliant. Complies with H.320 videoconferencing standards, global
ISDN standards, and ATM Forum User Network Interface (UNI) standards to insure interoperability. The
V-Gate is software driven, allowing flexibility to precede and follow standards.
- IMUX Service. Provides BONDING inverse multiplexing (IMUX) service which divides high speed data,
derived from the MVIP, into multiple 56 or 64 Kbps channels, enabling 384 Kbps ISDN calls without
additional hardware.
- PRI and BRI Support for Simultaneous Connections. Available in Primary Rate Interface (PRI) T1/E1 and
Basic Rate Interface (BRI) configurations. V-Gate configurations are scalable, supporting from one to four BRI
cards, one PRI card, or a combination of each.
- Guaranteed Class of Service. Uses First Virtual's MOS (Media Operating Software) to transparently map
ISDN/H.320 services over ATM virtual circuits, providing synchronous transport across the workgroup to the
gateway, as required by ISDN.
- DID Support. Supports Direct Inward Dialing (DID) for incoming calls (PRI only).
Multimedia Gateway Server Architecture
The V-Gate serves as the gateway between an ATM videoconferencing workgroup and an ISDN network. The
V-Gate converts cells on an ATM network into synchronous ISDN bit streams. Through a Multivendor Interface
Protocol (MVIP) bus, these bit streams are directed to multiple ISDN cards.
V-Gate Client Requirements
To communicate with the V-Gate, client PCs require the following hardware and software:
- Multimedia II PC
- Windows 95, Windows for Workgroups 3.xx, or Windows 3.x
- MOS
- V-NIC with MVIP videoconferencing hardware and software (VAM-1000 or VAM-1500)
- Desktop videoconferencing package such as PictureTel, VTEL, or Zydacron
ISDN SERVICES
Network Access Method: PRI/T1, PRI/E1, and BRI ISDN services. PRI/T1 supports 23B+D access (USA, Japan).
PRI/E1 supports 29B+D access (Europe). BRI supports 2B+D access (multiples of 64 or 56 Kbps).
WAN Call Speeds: Multiples of 64/56 Kbps up to 384/336 Kbps
IMUX Service: Provides BONDING Inverse Multiplexing Mode 1. One 384 Kbps BONDING session per card.
ISDN Call Routing: Unlimited number of users for outgoing; one user per BRI port for incoming. PRI incoming call
routing limited by the number of DID phone numbers
