A Pioneering HistoryRalph Ungermann is the founder and CEO of First Virtual® Corporation (FVC), the leader in desktop multimedia networking products. First Virtual is focused on developing innovative networking products that help enable desktop PCs to become high-quality communications platforms. First Virtual's goal is to enable the widespread deployment of strategic multimedia business applications such as video collaboration and learning. As the name implies, First Virtual operates as a real "virtual" corporation in order to gain more leverage and speed than traditional organizational structures. To achieve this, First Virtual has focused on only two core competencies: fast and continuous innovation; and building powerful partnerships. All other functions are outsourced to "best of breed" partners. Mr. Ungermann was formerly CEO and co-founder of Ungermann-Bass, Inc., created in 1979. Ungermann-Bass (now UB Networks) was the first independent LAN company in the industry and is still considered to be one of the top networking providers in the world. Prior to his work at Ungermann-Bass, Mr. Ungermann was also the co-founder and COO of Zilog, an early leader in the microprocessor industry, which introduced the successful Z80 product line. Preceding his work at Zilog, Ungermann was employed at Intel where he was the product development manager for the early Intel microprocessors. Mr. Ungermann obtained a BSEE in Communications from the University of California at Berkeley and a MSEE in Computer Architecture from the University of California at Irvine. |
